William STYRON (1925-2006)


PULITZER PRIZE-WINNING novelist William Styron, the celebrated author of Sophie’s Choice (1979), The Confessions of Nat Turner (1967) and Lie Down in Darkness (1951), died on Wednesday, November 1, 2006. Reading his novels that dealt with the seamier aspects of life and history: depression and suicide, slavery and the Holocaust leaves you exhausted. One of the hallmarks of great writing is that they leave you exhausted and enlightened after reading them. Styron’s books do that to you.
